This one is epic. Not because of what I did to it but because of Paxton’s original. So much personality there , a cool composition…and depth! Foreground and background characters…and all this on a PAPER PLATE! The kid has promise..
As a side note…it’s not actually Spongebob and Patrick. It looked like heroic versions of them to me but this is his original creation. I will ask him their names when he wakes up.
It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Mostly due to time restraints but also because when Paxton saw the last round he started just scribbling on paper so I’d do another one. I had to wait for him to forget so he’d go back to thoughtful little drawings…and boy did he deliver! This one called “Spider-man no more” is an emotional piece depicting the desire of Peter Parker to lock Spider-Man away and return to a normal life. He told me this…I thought it was beautiful.
Here’s where I finished…or at least stopped working for now. I was originally looking at old “Quantum Redshift” characters I had done and I hated them. I wanted to do a new character based on my old work that would show me where I have improved over the last 10 years as well as push me on where to go next. Here she is.
These things are always best in 3′s. This is the latest and last for a week or so. I think I might make this a weekly feature or open it up to other artist dad’s looking to be creative with their kid’s work. One thing for sure, this is the most fun I’ve had in months. I’ve missed drawing for myself…
My 6 year old son, Paxton, is quite the artist. When I run around the house cleaning up all his discarded sketches I alway see something fun in them and wonder “if he knew photoshop, what would he do with these?”. So I got the idea to step in as an excercise and render his stuff up trying as hard to keep to the source material as possible. This is the first result.
So…it’s been years. How’ve you been? I’ve been working on videogames as a concept artist. Sometimes it’s been great!….sometimes it has sucked, but you know what? It’s still the greatest job ever in the history of anything. When I started PolyKarbon back in 1999 it was to chronicle my journey from wannabe artist to professional artist. A lot of you came along for the ride. Then I actually got a job in the videogame industry in October 2001….and Polykarbon, the website, began to collect dust. Shame on me.
The question I get most is “Where are the tutorials?”. I’ll give you the old famous ones right here and now. Tutorials. click it.
I’ve missed you, you’ve missed me. Let’s get reaquainted!
