Practice words
Back to Main

I put together the 6 words that are probably the most important words to use for forming questions in Japanese. They are "Who, What, Where, When, Why & How Much". Practice these like crazy.
Notice on "Doushite" I have the phonetic spelling as "Doh-shtay"..that's because the "i" is practically silent.

Dare (dah-ray): Who
Dare desu ka? Who is it?
Nan (nahn): What
Nan desu ka? What is it?
Doko (doh-koh): Where
(Hon) wa doko ni arimasu ka?
Where is the (book)?
Itsu (eetsoo): When
Tanjoubi wa itsu desu ka?
When is your Birthday?
Doushite (doh-shtay): Why
Doushite sushi ga suki desu ka?
Why do you like Sushi?
Ikura (eekoorah): How Much
kore wa ikura desu ka?
How much is this?

Now...using the Hirigana alphabet provided can you write out the following sentences completely in Hirigana?:

1) Dare desu ka?
2) Nan desu ka?
3) Hon wa doko ni arimasu ka?*
4) Tanjoubi wa itsu desu ka?*
5) Doushite sushi ga suki desu ka?
6) Kore wa ikura desu ka?*

* Why did I make the "wa" bold? Because you may think when writing out this sentence that you should use the actual Hirigana symbol for "wa"...however, in Japanese, when "wa" is used as a particle or connector word it is written as "ha". So use the symbol "ha" instead of "wa" when writing these sentences.

Come back later and I'll post the solutions.
